Letter to the Editor
Who Needs Math?

To the public, math has been one of the most inscrutable of scientific disciplines. Not only is the language of math difficult, but it is deceptive why it's relevant to daily life. In fact, math is ubiquitous, yet central to many important technologies.

In a talk intended for a general audience, Professor Tony F. Chan, president and chair-professor in the mathematics department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, will give examples from a personal perspective to illustrate the unexpected role of math.

This lecture is set for 3:30 p.m. on September 23 in Theatre T6 of the Meng Wah Complex at the University of Hong Kong. For enquiries, please call (852) 2241 5861.
