Which Outsider Most Affects U.S. Policy?

Among all the contemporary foreign individuals affecting United States foreign policy towards a country, Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi may be the most influential. The extent of her influence and bipartisan support during several presidential administrations is remarkable for its consistency and ubiquity. Important questions arise about future American policy under President Barack Obama's “pragmatic engagement” and after the Burmese military junta's planned 2010 elections.

At Hong Kong University on June 23, Professor David I. Steinberg, a specialist in Asian Studies from Georgetown University, will deliver a global citizenship public lecture titled Aung San Suu Kyi and U.S. Policy Towards Burma / Myanmar. This event, in English, begins at 6 p.m. in HKU's Meng Wah Complex.
