Letter to the Editor
Technology Puts Libraries in Decline

On February 25, Professor Michael Shamos, from Carnegie Mellon University and a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong, will discuss Google’s big e-book project and the rapid rise of e-book viewers like Sony Reader and Amazon Kindle.

He says piracy is an important factor in lowering the price of digitized books. The combined effect of technological innovation may reduce the useful lifetime of traditional libraries from centuries to just decades or years.

Professor Shamos will speak at 7 p.m. The venue is ADC308, 3/F, HKU SPACE, Admiralty Centre, 18 Harcourt Road, Hong Kong.
