Teardrops Likely During 'Dangerous' Korean Movie

Untold Scandal, a South Korean film released in 2003, won prizes at the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Korean Grand Bell Awards. Hong Kong's Culture Club Gallery will screen this movie starting at 8 p.m. on July 13.

Combining bold erotica, historical detail and eloquent tragedy, Untold Scandal takes root from Choderlos de Laclo's French novel Dangerous Liaisons. It is set in Korea amid the repressive 18th century Joseon Dynasty, already enough to distinguish it from previous film adaptations.

A beautiful, cynical noble-woman makes a bet with her free-spirited cousin that he can have sex with her if he seduces a young woman of great virtue. He accepts the challenge with enthusiasm, not suspecting a nasty trap.

Stunningly well produced, this Korean version has an attractive, skillful cast and slick, artful sets and production values. Viewers may be moved to tears, especially near the ending.
