Zoom, an exhibition of paintings and photography by Simone Haas, opens at Hong Kong's Culture Club Gallery with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on September 1. The exhibition runs until September 17.
According to Haas, “Whether it's a seemingly average face (human/animal) or an object, there's something in common: angles that when captured closely instantly become interesting. It's a matter of how to see these images from a different point of view.”
To render common things aesthetic, Haas takes a close look at everything and translates it into something unique -- zooming in on people's faces, animals and things, always as part of a bigger image and surroundings.
Emotions and sometimes humor appear in the images. Haas dedicates the exhibition to the faces that inspired her.
Born in Germany, the artist worked in Europe before moving to the Philippines in 2004. In 2009, she moved to Hong Kong where she feels both at home and foreign. Mixed feelings heighten her sensitivity and translate into her work.
