Space on Walls Touches a Void

A show of paintings, titled Space (Touching the Void), by Vickie Chan (alias Chantown) continues until March 5 at the Culture Club Gallery in Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, space is a massive commodity, and it's easy to become obsessed with creating, finding, getting, affording and keeping it. Chan explores the wider implications of space, from lacking enough to emptiness, desolation, loss and voids, all emotions that she relates to her experiences as a half-Chinese girl growing up in Britain. By juxtaposing void spaces with vibrant splashes of paint, sand, collage, embroidery and lyrical text, she creates interesting dualities.

This Hong Kong-based artist-musician finds inspiration in popular culture, music and the world around her. She often cites song lyrics or record covers when juxtaposing image and text, creating an engaging discourse. At first glance, image and text hold their own meanings and memories, but once together, a dichotomy emerges that needs a second look.
