Sounds of War Louder Than Any Piano Music

The Pianist is a 2002 biographical war film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody. It's an adaptation of an autobiography of the same name by famous Jewish-Polish musician Władysław Szpilman.

The musician (Brody), who works for Warsaw Radio, sees his whole world collapse with the invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, and the subsequent outbreak of world war. After German bombing rocks the radio station, Szpilman goes home and learns that Britain and France have declared war on Nazi Germany. He and his family rejoice, believing the conflict will end quickly.

The film won critical praise and multiple awards, including Oscars at the 75th Academy Awards for best director, best adapted screenplay and best actor.

Hong Kong's Culture Club Gallery will screen The Pianist beginning at 8 p.m. on February 1.
