Consider the following details about two leading individuals poised to appear at the Man Hong Kong International Literary Festival from March 11-19.
Louis de Bernières was twice short-listed for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize before winning it in 1995. A playwright, poet and novelist, he’s best known as the author of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. But he’s also an accomplished musician who plays many instruments, including flute and mandolin, and often performs with his band, The Antonius Players.
Alexander McCall Smith, best-selling author of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, recently created an opera, The Okavango Macbeth, when wanting to contribute to Botswana’s musical culture. Music appears in many of his works. He plays bassoon “badly” and founded “the Really Terrible Orchestra”.
