Seminar Judges Trial of China's Liu Xiaobo

Dissident Liu Xiaobo was charged under China’s criminal code with instigating subversion of state political power by slander for publishing articles on the Internet, drafting Charter 08 and seeking other people to sign it. On December 25, the Beijing First Intermediate People’s Court decided that Liu was guilty. He was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.

Experts on Chinese law and international human-rights laws will analyze if the judgment can satisfy legal requirements when they speak in a seminar at 9:30 a.m. on January 30 at the University of Hong Kong (Council Chamber, 8/F, Meng Wah Complex). They’ll look beyond the trial and assess Charter 08’s significance on the prospects for Chinese political reform.
