Letter to the Editor
Rice Cookers Fill Bellies and a Book

You are invited to an “In Conversation with the Author” session with Dr Yoshiko Nakano, an assistant professor in Hong Kong University’s department of Japanese studies. His new book, Where There Are Asians, There Are Rice Cookers, is the first to focus on the electric rice cooker and its impact on the lives of Asian people.

Based on more than 40 interviews with key figures at National/Panasonic and the Shun Hing Group, the book provides insight into how the National rice cooker was localized and then globalized. Interspersed are personal accounts by people in Japan and Hong Kong about how owning a rice cooker meant more than just a convenient way to cook rice.

This book-launch event takes place at 3 p.m. on January 8 in the K.K. Leung Building at HKU.
