Old Chinese Movies Worth a New Look?

Working together with the Hong Kong Film Archive, the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at Hong Kong University will host a conference titled History of Early Chinese Cinema(s) Revisited on December 15-17.

Specialists in Chinese-film studies from different parts of the world will discuss the origins of Chinese film and related topics. The topics include:
-- conceptualization of Chinese film in the early 20th century;
-- prominent film figures in the 1910s and 1920s;
-- influences from Europe, America and Japan;
-- special features as business, technology and art; and
-- comparisons of Chinese film’s development in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei.

For two days, the conference, in Putonghua and English, occupies the Convocation Room, 2/F, Main Building, at Hong Kong University. On the final day, it shifts to the Hong Kong Film Archive, 50 Lei King Road, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong.
