Since 1994, Hong Kong has been a nuclear-powered society with almost a quarter of its electricity coming from nuclear sources. China plans to significantly expand nuclear generation, largely in Guangdong Province. With the events at Fukushima in Japan bringing nuclear power into focus, increased “literacy” on nuclear issues will help civil society in Hong Kong to debate nuclear energy as a part of the fuel mix.
Join us on June 10 at a half-day forum organized by the Civic Exchange. The event begins at 9 a.m. at the YMCA (Assembly Hall, 4/F, North Tower, 41 Salisbury Road) in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
Topics will include:
-- basics of nuclear power and why Hong Kong must be nuclear literate;
-- lessons in emergency management from major incidents;
-- how Hong Kong would handle a major incident;
-- China's nuclear development;
-- lessons on the location of facilities, plant architecture and safety systems; and
-- management systems and training.
