The Saskatchewan Roughriders have introduced Greg Marshall as the football team's 28th head coach in modern history.
“The name we kept coming back to was Greg Marshall,” said Ken Miller, the vice-president of football operations. “Coach Marshall brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and has been successful as a coach and a player.”
Marshall spent the past two seasons in Hamilton as an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. There, he built a solid defence that allowed players like Markeith Knowlton and Jamall Johnson to develop.
“I am thankful and excited to be the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders,” said Marshall. “It is an honor. This organization has a bright future.”
Marshall has been a defensive coordinator for five Canadian Football League teams, including three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He spent the 2005 season with the Ottawa Renegades. Earlier, he worked five seasons in Edmonton, including the 2003 championship season. In 1994, he previously joined Saskatchewan as a defensive line coach, staying until 1999.
In a nine-year CFL playing career, Marshall was a highly regarded defensive lineman for the Ottawa Rough Riders. In 1983, he was the league's top defensive player. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1978 and played briefly with the Eagles and the Baltimore Colts.
