Letter to the Editor
New Appetite For China's Hungry Years

Although Chinese Communist Party archives remain closely guarded, in the past few years they gradually opened to the extent that serious research has become possible on the famine in the Great Leap Forward from 1958 to 1962. In a fresh look at the incident, Professor Frank Dikötter, chair-professor of humanities at the University of Hong Kong, estimates that up to 45 million people may have died, much higher than previous figures.

You're invited to a talk by Professor Dikötter about his new book titled Mao's Great Famine. The event (in English) is scheduled for November 11 at 6:30 p.m. in HKU's Rayson Huang Theatre.
