The Burma military regime's election commission has announced the long-awaited poll date for the 2010 elections: November 7. State-run TV and radio ran the election commission's brief statement which called on political parties to submit candidate lists from August 16-30.
Numerologists had speculated about the election date. The regime's choice does appear significant (seven plus 11 equals 18, which is divisible by nine, an auspicious number).
Also November 7 falls a week before pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's possible release from house arrest. The choice again demonstrates that the regime has no intention to suffer a humiliating defeat as in 1990.
