On the International Day of Peace (September 21), the Best Friend Education Project, part of the struggle for freedom in Burma, will hold an inaugural “Walk for Peace” in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We welcome members of the Burmese and international community to join.
Supporters should participate to raise awareness of the ongoing violence in Burma, emphasize that the coming elections there won't solve the conflicts, call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners and spread a message of peace.
With approval from the Chiang Mai Police, the marchers plan to meet at 9 a.m. in front of Wat Suan Dok on Suthep Road. They will march around the walls of Chiang Mai's moat to Thapae Gate. There a rally will call for an international commission to probe the crimes against humanity by Burma's military regime.
The Walk for Peace signals solidarity with those struggling for peace, freedom and democracy in Burma. It also prods the international community to recognize that the regime's “military selection” is not a real election, but a ploy to cement dictatorial military rule and impunity.
Established in 1999 by Burmese monks in exile along the Thai-Burma border, the Best Friend Education Project raises awareness about Burma by spreading wishes to end violence and suffering.
