Hong Kong legislative councilor Emily Lau, from the Democratic Party, held a news conference to condemn Chengdu public security officers (in Sichuan Province, China) for assaulting Hong Kong journalists. The journalists were covering the trial of human-rights defender Tan Zuoren on February 9.
Tan received a five-year sentence for subversion of the state. Emily sent letters to Hong Kong chief executive Donald Tsang and to the director of the central government liaison office, Peng Qinghua, urging them to convey the anger and outrage of Hong Kong people to the mainland authorities and demanding an end to police assaults on journalists.
