Maybe there's nothing surprising about the great style of the movie, A Single Man, since it's by Tom Ford. Still you may be thrilled at how well the story's told in this, the first movie Ford directs.
A Single Man is a 2009 drama based on a novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. It stars Colin Firth, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of George Falconer, a depressed, gay, British university professor living in southern California in 1962.
Taking place in one day, a month after the Cuban missile crisis, A Single Man shows Falconer dreaming that he encounters the body of his longtime partner, Jim (Matthew Goode), at the scene of the car accident that took Jim's life eight months earlier. After awakening, George delivers a voiceover about the pain and depression he has endured and his plan to commit suicide that evening.
