How Much Did Politics Change?

What lies ahead for Hong Kong's political reforms? After a heated political tug-of-war, the Legislative Council has passed government bills to expand the group of voters selecting the chief executive and increase the number of elected LegCo seats. The breakthrough came when the Central Government responded to the moderate democrats' compromise package.

The Hong Kong government describes the votes as historic and a big step forward. Have the divisions on political reform widened the rift in Hong Kong society? What does the future political landscape look like? Do functional constituencies have any value, and should they be abolished?

We have invited three leading LegCo members, Emily Lau of the Democratic Party, Audrey Eu of the Civic Party and Miriam Lau of the Liberal Party, to share their views in a discussion on July 22. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Hong Kong Club in Central District.
