Letter to the Editor
Hong Kong Nature Preserved in a Book

Is Hong Kong merely an urban and economic place? An illustrated talk to the University of Hong Kong Libraries' Reading Club will offer a photographer's answer. Edward Stokes visited Hong Kong's wild places from 1993 to 2003.

A new book, Hong Kong Nature Landscapes, holds his finest images. Despite development and pollution, interest remains in the beauty and value of Hong Kong's nature. Yet realities of the Pearl River Delta's rapid drive for growth and local issues temper optimism. Thus, Hong Kong incrementally loses or compromises parts of its natural heritage.

Stokes will discuss the book, his memories of taking the photos and his thoughts on Hong Kong nature conservation. Visitors also can see an exhibition of his framed photographs and book-production materials.

The discussion is set for 7:15 p.m. on June 24 in the Special Collections section of the Main Library at HKU.
