HKU Leads Asia in Arts and Humanities

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been ranked first in Asia and 36th in the world for arts-and-humanities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings announced recently. Only two Asian universities made it into the top-50.

While university rankings vary widely because they use different criteria and methodologies, HKU's presence among the best recognizes outstanding achievements by its Faculty of Arts. Professor Kam Louie, the faculty dean, said, the ranking reflects “our excellence in teaching and research, particularly in China-West studies".

The faculty's respected scholars include Professor Tan Li-hai (his State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences recently received a grant from the Chinese government) and Frank Dikötter, the latter a recipient of the prestigious 2011 BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction for his book Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62.
