The Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club extends sympathy to the family of past-Roughrider-great Gene Wlasiuk, who has died.
Wlasiuk spent nine seasons with the Roughriders from 1959-67 after playing two Canadian Football League seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He played in the Riders' defensive backfield and also returned punts. His 549 punt returns remain at the top of the Riders' all-time list and his 3,296 punt-return yards stand second all-time, achieved before blocking was allowed on punt returns.
In 132 games for the Riders, Wlasiuk had 27 interceptions and 12 fumble recoveries. He helped to win the team's first Grey Cup championship in 1966.
