| Set in the 40th century, the movie Barbarella follows the adventures of a title character played by Jane Fonda. Hong Kong fans can see this classic cult movie again at a special screening in the Culture Club Gallery starting at 8:30 p.m. on September 1.
In the film, the president of Earth assigns Barbarella to retrieve Dr Durand Durand from the planet SoGo. Mostly, the plot places Barbarella in erotic situations. For example, she’s seduced by a human SoGo resident who introduces her to penetrative intercourse (civilized people in Barbarella’s society find sexual release through pharmaceuticals).
Initially, the movie failed critically and at the box office. But after its 1977 release on home video, it gained a cult following. Fonda later lamented that she lost the lead roles in two hit films, Bonnie and Clyde and Rosemary’s Baby, to star in Barbarella.
The British band Duran Duran takes its name from the mad scientist, Dr Durand Durand. Some of the band’s early shows happened at a Birmingham nightclub called Barbarella’s.
