Finnish Boy Seeks Safety in Sweden

Äideistä parhain (English title Mother of Mine) is an award-winning Finnish / Swedish film released in 2005. The Culture Club Gallery in Hong Kong will screen this movie, directed by Klaus Härö based on a novel by Heikki Hietamies, on February 24 at 8 p.m.

Mother of Mine tells the story of a Finnish boy named Eero Lahti, played by Topi Marjaniemi, as a child, and Esko Salminen, as an adult. After Eero’s father dies in the Winter War, his mother (Marjaana Maijala) falls into a deep depression and decides to send her son to Sweden as a refugee. The story focuses on the boy’s difficulites in adjusting to language, resentment from his new mother (Maria Lundqvist), who would have preferred a girl, and his fears of abandonment.
