Letter to the Editor
Finally, Voices Heard
Xinran, the author of China Witness: Voices From a Silent Generation, will speak at a Hong Kong literary evening on September 19. The book emerges from 20 years of research about an earlier generation and its history burned in the Cultural Revolution, but available from voices soon to be lost forever.

Born in Beijing, Xinran lived with her family until separated by the Cultural Revolution when she was seven. Later she became a radio-host. On a talk-show, Words On the Night Breeze, she invited women to call and share their life stories. Soon she received 100 letters a day. In 1997, she travelled to London, where she now lives. There, she began to write down the stories, leading to her first book, The Good Women of China.

Tickets for the literary evening cost HK$100 and are available at Bookazine stores. The event takes place at The Classified Room, 108 Hollywood Road, Soho, Hong Kong.
