Film Shines Light on Burma's Sham Election

Burma Partnership and Kestrel Media have released a 17-minute film, This Is Not Democracy, showing why Burma's people believe the upcoming election will bring no genuine democratic progress. The film examines historical context, showing how the military regime's so-called Roadmap to Democracy, including the 2008 Constitution, merely tries to cement military rule under a civilian façade.

“We were cheated and will be cheated again and again,” says Ashin Sopaka of the International Burmese Monks Organization. The film also has interviews with Naw Htoo Paw of the Karen Women's Organization and U Win Hlaing, a National League for Democracy MP-elect in the 1990 elections and a former political prisoner, plus historical and recent footage from inside Burma.

The film can be viewed on the Burma Partnership website or on YouTube.
