Family's History Helped To Shape the Philippines

Beneath the Banyan Tree, a new book by Cornelia (Nelly) Lichauco Fung, is a daughter's account of her family's story through four generations and turbulent times. It's full of simplicity, candor and affection.

As an identity and sense of nationhood emerged in the Philippines, the Lichauco family helped to create the nation. Beginning with the arrival of a Chinese ancestor, Thomas Lichauco from Tongan in Fujian Province in the early 19th century, and Spanish antecedents from Galicia, the author traces a multi-racial and multicultural tapestry that blends eastern and western elements.

The author will speak to the HKU Libraries Reading Club on January 20 (starting at 7:15 p.m.) in the special collections section of the Main Library at the University of Hong Kong.
