The movie Mulholland Drive is a 2001 neo-noir psychological thriller written and directed by David Lynch and starring Naomi Watts, Laura Elena Harring and Justin Theroux. Hong Kong's Culture Club Gallery will screen this movie at 8 p.m. on August 31.
The surrealist film rates with Eraserhead (1977) and Blue Velvet (1986) among Lynch's best. Conceived as a TV pilot, much of it was shot to keep it open-ended for a potential series. After seeing Lynch's version, TV executives rejected it, so he provided an ending to make it a feature film. The half-pilot, half-feature result and Lynch's characteristic style leave the meaning of the movie's events open to interpretation.
The film tells of aspiring actress Betty Elms, new in Los Angeles, who befriends an amnesiac hiding in her aunt’s apartment. Several seemingly unrelated vignettes eventually connect.
