Elephants' Fate Frustrates
In a give-away magazine called City Life that circulates in Chiang Mai, I read a good article about the elephants being dragged around the streets to beg. Lek, the heroine of the Cairns Media Magazine story headlined Tiny Thai Woman Stands Tall For Trunked Giants (September 13, 2007), was quoted.

Still no one takes care for the elephants. Depressingly, Lek’s a lone voice. How can the elephants be saved if Thailand’s government doesn’t care? It seems that the police happily look the other way, rather than prosecute the mahouts (elephant trainers) for illegally managing the big animals.

Life expectancy for these elephants is very low. The City Life story left me feeling sad and frustrated.

Here’s the Web address for the sad story: www.chiangmainews.com/ecmn/viewfa.php?id=1975
