Does Novelist Tell Tales About Herself?

How much does an author become the character(s) in his or her novels? In “fiction”, the answer often looks hard to gauge.

On February 24, join a provocative conversation (in English) with author Xu Xi and journalist Richard Lord as they discuss Xu's newest novel, Habit of a Foreign Sky. Xu also will read from the book. The event starts at 7:15 p.m. in the Special Collections Section, first floor, Main Library, University of Hong Kong.

In Habit of a Foreign Sky, a mixed-race, single mother named Gail Szeto loses her only child and mother within two years, leaving her with only a hard-won career. Torn between New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai, her life goes into free-fall. Once sure of her direction, she now sees no clear path. The book was a finalist for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize.
