Professor Vivian Yam, chair of chemistry at the University of Hong Kong, has been named as a recipient of the 13th L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Awards 2011 for her contributions in light-emitting materials and innovative ways of capturing solar energy.
Each year five outstanding women scientists, one per continent, are honored. Yam represents the Asia-Pacific region.
She earned Bachelor and PhD degrees from HKU in 1985 and 1988 before joining the chemistry department in 1990. Her work pertains to inorganic/organometallic syntheses and photochemistry related to luminescence and solar-energy conversion.
Yam urges young scientists to follow their interests and be passionate and dedicated in research. The other award recipients are Professor Faiza Al-kharafi (Africa/Arab States), Professor Anne L'huillier (Europe), Professor Silvia Torres-Peimbert (Latin America) and Professor Jillian Banfield (North America). An awards ceremony takes place on March 3 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
