Filmmaker Peter Ho Sun Chan discussed his latest film, Wu Xia, with cultural columnist Ma Ka Fai in a recent forum at the University of Hong Kong. Part of the University Artists Scheme, the forum allowed the HKU community and public to engage with an acclaimed director. The event was moderated by Esther M.K. Cheung of HKU's department of comparative literature.
Chan described the movie as a fresh take on the martial-arts genre through use of psychological elements. It follows a martial-arts expert whose wish for a tranquil life is undermined by a determined detective. Initially, it focuses more on dramatic elements than on action ones.
Ma discussed how the audience is led into the characters' heads to share conflicted thoughts on the nature of humanity.
Launched in 2008, the University Artists Scheme brings international-caliber artists on-campus to share knowledge and enrich the lives of students, staff and the community.
