Calligraphy Needed to Pass the Big Test
In ancient China, the civil-service examination provided the main way for literati to enter the bureaucracy. All the examination questions were from the Four Classics, and candidates needed to be able to manage regular script calligraphy. Therefore, regular-script-for-civil-service-examination has become a special category of Chinese calligraphy.

Until July 10, the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole at the University of Hong Kong presents a special exhibition of calligraphy from 20 leading scholars for the imperial examination in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). From these exhibits, we can grasp special elements in this Chinese calligraphic style.
