Letter to the Editor
Asian Billionaires Go Under a Microscope
On November 8, HK Magazine, a print publication, and Dymocks Booksellers, Hong Kong’s largest English-bookstore chain, will present a literary dinner at which Asia specialist Joe Studwell will introduce his new book, Asian Godfathers: Money and Power in Hong Kong and South East Asia. The event at Post 97 in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong district begins at 7:30 p.m.

Studwell’s book explores a world of wealth and power while revealing the economic rulers -- billionaires like Hong Kong’s Li Ka-shing and Stanley Ho, Singapore’s Ng Teng Fong, Malaysia’s Lim Goh Tong and the Philippines’ Lucio Tan, a tobacco mogul who started as a janitor. A complex mythology, laced with Asian views on culture, entrepreneurialism and economics, surrounds them.

For nearly 20 years, Studwell has worked as a freelance writer and broadcaster. His first book, The China Dream: the Quest for the Greatest Untapped Market on Earth, was a bestseller.

Tickets for the literary dinner cost HK$380 and are available at Dymocks bookstores. The price includes a glass of wine, a three-course dinner and tea or coffee.
