Acclaimed Movie to Flutter Across Screen

Starting at 8 p.m. on March 10, Hong Kong's Culture Club Gallery will screen the movie Butterfly, once selected to open the Venice Film Festival Critics Week. This Cantonese film with English subtitles also earned best-new-artist recognition for Tian Yuan at the 2005 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Plus Butterfly had nominations at the 2004 Taiwan Golden Horse Awards for best adapted screenplay (Yan Yan Mak) and best new performer (Tian Yuan). In 2005, its other star, Josie Ho, received a nomination for best actress at Hong Kong's Golden Bauhinia Awards.

The film follows Flavia (Ho), a married teacher who encounters a free-spirited female singer-songwriter named Yip (Tian Yuan) and strikes up a relationship with her. Although a lesbian, Flavia never can act like one because she grew up in a society where homosexuality wasn't accepted. As a teenager, Flavia once fell in love with a girl in her class, but the relationship ended when discovered by her parents. Heartbroken, Flavia later married a caring businessman. When in her 30s and with a child, she meets the beautiful Yip.
