Stupid, Like Foxes
After more thought, I’ve concluded that I was wrong (Mucked Up Everywhere, October 5, 2006) about the reaction of international leaders to the coup in Thailand. Those people aren’t all idiots. They have not been misinformed. They do know what’s going on.
But what’s right or wrong doesn’t matter. Likewise, what’s good for Thailand and its people doesn’t matter. What does matter is the best (economic) interests of Australia, New Zealand, the US, the European Union and others. This determines their stance. Then they’ll pick convenient information while ignoring the rest.
So they’re “stupid as foxes”. They knew they were “in bed” with a corrupt regime in Thailand, but the cloak of democracy made it look wholesome -- until the coup plotters came along and spoiled it all.
