Gladly Among the First
What a lovely book review for Shop in Shenzhen ! Thank you so much. I feel honored to be among the first of your soon-to-be long list of reviews.
Ironically, I'm just about to release the book's 2006 version. Shall I send you a copy? A few months ago, I also launched a similarly small guide, Shop in Hong Kong , An Insider's Guide.
I found your magazine interesting and particularly enjoyed the photos and captions of dogs on the beach. I liked your unique take on the Lamma Island critters.
Are you planning to specialize in reviewing locally produced books? A few months back, I participated in a collaboration to create an anthology of short stories for children. The authors are all expats living in Hong Kong . The book is called Thomas Beckam Wang and was edited by Nuri Vittachi. The proceeds are going to a charity called Friends Unlimited.
Working with Nuri, I discovered that there's a real shortage of children's books with Asian settings. Most children's stories speak of a Western upbringing.
Again, thank you for the review.
