YUNG SHUE WAN, Lamma Island, Hong Kong -- Do the news vendors on Main Street here know something about Lamma Island’s future that other residents don’t? They may, judging by the new magazine titles on offer.
Recently, Lamma Islanders have benefited from a widening range of reading materials going on sale near their homes. But some of the magazines seem a trifle strange, even inappropriate.
Lamma stays serene due to the absence of motor vehicles. Without cars, trucks, buses or taxis, the residents prefer to walk or ride bicycles. They commute on ferries.
Yet a leading news vendor prominently displays the glossy periodicals, Automobile and CarPlus. The passing pedestrians must wonder…. Has the vendor been tipped off about big changes in Lamma’s future?
