HONG KONG – Recently, I received important news. Notice has arrived from the managing agents at the Pokfulam Kennels that Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) has three months to vacate the premises.

We knew this situation would arise. Still, it came as a shock and was unexpected at this point. For two years, we’ve searched without success for a new site where our dogs can stay. We’ve asked the Lands Department to help and spent hours in the countryside to check potential areas. But land-use restrictions or the fact that we have 200 dogs made each place unsuitable. Every one was too close to residential zones or so far out that access would be difficult.

Many dog shelters operate in the New Territories, but HKDR isn’t a shelter – it’s a re-homing kennel. We don’t want to keep the dogs. Instead, we want to see them adopted. The less time they spend with us, the better. So we must stay accessible to volunteers and potential adopters, not hidden deep in the New Territories.

Facing the inevitable, we need help. Our 200 dogs will be completely homeless unless a last-minute angel comes to our assistance. The dogs need somewhere to go.

To anyone thinking of adopting a pet, please consider the dogs at our kennels. We have so many lovely characters, young or old. Right now, their future looks bleak.

Needing money to fund a move when and if we find that elusive site, we need support and donations more than ever.
