Editor’s Note: The writers, leading members of Hong Kong’s Democratic Party, have campaigned for many years to achieve meaningful democratic reforms. The unelected administration ruling Hong Kong consistently bows to Beijing and blocks any substantial progress.
HONG KONG – Today, the Hong Kong Government published a package of proposals on the methods to select its chief executive and to form the Legislative Council in 2012. Pan-democratic Legco members, including those in the Democratic Party, said they will oppose the inadequate reform package.
A Democratic Party caucus meeting took place after the government announcement. Unanimously, the caucus members deemed the package unacceptable.
The government has given no firm guarantee that a genuinely democratic election will take place for the chief-executive position even in 2017 and for Legco even in 2020.
Since the government won’t state clearly the nomination threshold for the 2017 chief-executive election or pledge to abolish all the undemocratic functional constituencies by 2020, the Democratic Party caucus will recommend to our members to reject the 2012 reform package.
