Music to Soothe the Hurting Bears

Bears aren’t known for their love music. Many prefer silence so they can snooze all winter. But even the burliest bruins may appreciate the human sentiments behind the tunes on February 18 at Delaney’s Irish pub in Hong Kong’s Wanchai district.

Moon Bear Rock, an annual fundraiser in support of the ongoing China Bear Rescue efforts by the Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), shapes up as the best event of its kind yet with an impressive lineup of bands playing for free.

“People of all ages gather to help end the brutal practice of farming Moon Bears for their bile,” said Animals Asia founder Jill Robinson. “Moon Bear Rock celebrates our achievements, but also has a serious side. More than 7,000 bears still endure lives of agony, enclosed in tiny cages on bear farms throughout China. They desperately need our help.”

Animals Asia has rescued 218 bears from such bile farms. These animals now prosper at a sanctuary in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

Moon Bear Rock begins at 4 p.m. and continues until midnight. The music will be an eclectic mix. Talented Australian singer/guitarist Greg Thomas will kick off the show, followed by Scarlett Lewis with her original mix of folk, jazz, blues and rock. Then it’s the Shotgun She-Ras, Hong Kong’s all-girl country band, and the Lamma Island rockers, Red Star Rising. The high-energy band Black Seraphine wraps up with old rock favorites. The cover charge is HK$200, and Delaney's is laying on a free veggie supper.

Delaney’s hosts the event for the third time. In 2006, more than 300 people attended, raising HK$131,000.

It’s all for a beary, beary good cause.
