HONG KONG – A former Serbian province, Kosovo has declared its independence despite harsh objections from Serbia and Russia. The Republic of Kosovo quickly gained diplomatic recognition in many overseas capitals, including Washington.
Such boldness, “can-do attitude” and forward focus should give timely inspiration to the advocates of political and personal freedoms here. If any jurisdiction needs to seize control of its own destiny, that place is Hong Kong.
For 150 years, we tolerated British colonialism. Then in 1997, London handed sovereignty to the Chinese mainland. The people at street level had no say and still lack political clout. Instead of a British governor, we’re ruled by a puppet-like chief executive, someone designated and manipulated by Beijing.
Despite promising democratic reforms for Hong Kong, the Chinese government blocks meaningful progress until at least 2017. Even then, Beijing wishes to “screen candidates” or similarly to corrupt new political procedures.
Maybe the public can gain control only by following Kosovo’s example. Leaders in Beijing won’t like that suggestion, but their dubious opinions deserve scant respect.
Nearby, Taiwan thrives on its independence and defiant attitude. Hong Kong should do the same. For too long, we’ve allowed the Chinese mainland to intimidate us.
When proclaiming Kosovo’s independence, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said: “From today onwards, Kosovo is proud, independent and free.” If only Hong Kong could say the same.
Our seven million people have much to learn from Kosovo’s two million. We wish them well and aspire to follow their example.
