The writer, from the Civic Party, is one of five legislative councilors ready to resign next week to force Hong Kong-wide by-elections as a referendum on the need for valid universal suffrage by no later than 2012. In a sinister turn of events maybe linked to Beijing’s objections to the referendum plan, someone recently burgled one of Chan’s offices.
HONG KONG -- This may not be the best of times, but definitely it’s not the worst of times. A new democratic movement has begun.
Now we are preparing for the upcoming “Five Districts Referendum” To make this epochal event a successful one that brings change, we need every member of Hong Kong society to become involved.
So we sincerely invite people to join our volunteer teams to take part in the movement. Should the referendum prove successful, the epic effort will be remembered in history.
Interested individuals can download and fill in a Volunteer Application Form and then email it (to info@tanyachan.hk) by January 27. Then we’ll contact them about a role on the team.
Along with all those who support this democratic movement, I’d be grateful if people would forward our message to family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, schoolmates and everyone else. I promise that, with everyone’s help and support, we will make a difference.
Soon there’ll be more news about the Five Districts Referendum. Anyone with queries about the volunteer recruitment should telephone Jo (at 852-2521-6292).
Our Five Districts Referendum kickoff ceremony, held together with the League of Social Democrats, will take place on January 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Chater Garden, Central.
We sincerely invite people to join us and to mark the prologue of an epic event.
